Asia: algo de esperanza
Casi por primera vez en una semana, somos testigos de las primeras buenas noticias procedentes del sur de Asia. La gigantesca operación de ayuda humanitaria está consiguiendo no sólo que los suministros lleguen a los aeropuertos de la zona, sino que comiencen a distribuirse en las ciudades.
La llegada de alimentos y agua es un hecho, incluso en la región indonesia de Aceh, una de las zonas más dañadas. En su capital, Banda Aceh, según el WP:
A week after a tsunami devastated the western end of Sumatra island, the streets of this provincial capital are beginning to show a semblance of rejuvenation, with markets reopening, power and water restored to nearly half the city and a paralyzing fuel shortage ended.The most notable progress came over the weekend as the Indonesian government dispatched scores of bulldozers, backhoes and trucks to excavate mountains of sludge and rubble from long stretches of downtown streets. The effort has not only helped spark the first stirrings of commercial activity but also aided the military's search for at least 30,000 bodies still believed to be decomposing amid the debris.
Está resultando fundamental la intervención de los helicópteros militares norteamericanos, capaces de entregar suministros en zonas completamente incomunicadas:
The head of the United Nation's relief operations in Indonesia, Michael Elmquist, said on Saturday the US navy's efforts in the isolated disaster areas were vital, as the near-starving survivors would not receive help otherwise."It's absolutely life saving," Elmquist, the chief of the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Indonesia, told AFP. "We are absolutely thrilled that Americans are doing that. They are the only ones who have the capacity to reach those parts of the population right now."
Esa es una de las razones por las que era tan importante que EEUU se volcara cuanto antes en la ayuda a los damnificados. Lo que cuentan los pilotos de los helicópteros resulta estremecedor. Hay zonas de la región de Aceh en las que casi no queda ningún edificio en pie:
They found that many towns and villages had suffered huge casualties: In the city of Meulaboh, about 110 miles south of Banda Aceh, the provincial capital, only 1,000 people survived out of a population of 60,000, said the Lincoln's skipper, Capt. Kendall Card.Si bien ya hay algunos casos de diarrea y enfermedades disentería, no hay informaciones sobre la temida epidemia de cólera. Permanece la duda sobre si el Ejército indonesio sea capaz de trabajar en colaboración con Naciones Unidas y las ONG locales e internacionales. Las autoridades civiles y militares indonesias tienen un largo historial de corrupción que las hace no muy fiables. De momento, las protestas de las ONG indonesias han hecho que el Ejército esté mas dispuesto a la coordinación de los esfuerzos.
