Una lluvia de balas
La periodista italiana Giuliana Sgrena ha dado ya su versión sobre el incidente en el que soldados norteamericanos dispararon contra el coche en el que viajaba. Contra lo que mantiene la versión facilitada por la III División de Infantería, Sgrena mantiene que el vehículo no viajaba a gran velocidad ni se encontró con ningún control militar.
"Los disparos no estaban justificados por la velocidad de nuestro coche", dice Sgrena, que sostiene que circulaban a velocidad "normal". Y sobre el lugar desde el que les dispararon, explica: "No era un control, sino una patrulla que comenzó a dispararnos tan pronto como nos enfocaron con una luz. No sabíamos de dónde venían los tiros".
EEUU es consciente de que el tiroteo, que acabó con la vida del agente italiano que había gestionado la liberación de Sgrena, puede perjudicar seriamente sus relaciones con Italia, uno de sus mejores aliados en Europa. Minutos después de conocerse la noticia, Berlusconi llamó a consultas al embajador norteamericano en Roma. Al día siguiente, y desde el Air Force One, Bush telefoneó a Berlusconi para presentar sus disculpas y prometer que se investigará el suceso.
No se hubieran tomado tantas molestias si el Gobierno italiano no hubiera reaccionado con tanta rapidez.
Persisten muchas dudas sobre las circunstancias del ataque sobre el coche de los italianos. Según la declaración que ha hecho Sgrena a los fiscales italianos, el control no estaba señalizado. Su descripción del incidente se parece mucho a otros sucesos ocurridos en Irak en los últimos meses.
El corresponsal de los periódicos de la cadena norteamericana Knight Ridder cuenta que es habitual que los soldados coloquen un vehículo en mitad de una carretera durante la noche y obliguen a parar a todos los coches. Si la visibilidad es mala y el coche no se detiene automáticamente, los soldados dan por hecho que se trata de una amenaza y lo llenan de balas:

Photographs of the incident showed the surviving children covered in their parents' blood.On Feb. 5, American soldiers at a checkpoint fired three shots into a truck carrying Western contractors on the airport road in Baghdad, according to an unclassified American government report. The truck had been approaching the checkpoint at 6 miles an hour when the shooting began. Though the truck took two shots to the side and one to the windshield, no one was hurt.
Reporteros sin Fronteras ha solicitado que se realice una investigación y que esté implicada en ella Naciones Unidas:
"A thorough investigation must be quickly carried out by the United Nations into this blunder with tragic consequences," Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Robert Ménard said."It is clear that his enquiry cannot be conducted just by the US army which in the past, especially in the case of the Palestine Hotel shooting that killed two journalists, produced reports aimed solely at exonerating the military," Ménard said, adding, "we demand to know the full truth about this distressing affair."
El ministro italiano de Exteriores ha dicho que se ha tratado de un giro trágico del destino. Pero el destino se ha repetido ya demasiadas veces en Irak.

Hello from italy.Today our justice minister, Castelli, commenting the words of G. Sgrena in his article, said :"A person who has been under pression for one month, as she has been, must only take a rest and stop saying stupid things..."It's unbelievable how this government is slave of the USA...they'are already ready to forget this fact...what a shame!!!WE MUST LEAVE IRAK NOW!!!!!!Best regards Fabio
