De Faluya al Congreso
La guerra de Irak aún no ha terminado, pero ya hay un veterano de sus combates que se presenta como candidato al Congreso de EEUU. A su vuelta de Irak, Paul Hackett, abogado de 43 años y reservista en los marines, aspira a convertirse en miembro de la Cámara de Representantes por un distrito de Ohio en unas elecciones parciales que se celebran en agosto.
En su web, aparecen fotos y referencias a su paso por Irak. Dice que inicialmente estaba en contra de la guerra, aunque luego se presentó como voluntario. Cree que EEUU no debe retirarse de Irak hasta que las fuerzas de seguridad iraquíes estén bien entrenadas y preparadas para garantizar la paz. Y apunta que eso no ocurrirá hasta dentro de mucho tiempo:
The good news is we can successfully exit Iraq once the roughly 140,000 Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) are adequately trained and skilled enough to defend their fledgling government. The bad news is they are nowhere near the level of skill to accomplish that mission and are likely years away from that goal.
I know this from fighting alongside Iraqis, and training them. They are simply not ready to defend their country against the insurgents that threaten to destroy Iraq’s future.
