¿Tienen raza los hoteles?
En las cartas al director, un lector de The Guardian relata el diálogo que tuvo al llegar a Israel con un encargado de seguridad del aeropuerto de Ben Gurion.
On a recent visit to Israel, I was interviewed by a young immigration officer who asked where I would be staying. When I said the American Colony Hotel in East Jerusalem she said: "But that is an Arab hotel. Why do you stay there? What's wrong with all the Jewish hotels in Jerusalem?" "I stay there because I like it," I said. "You like Arabs?" she said, a note of disgust in her voice.
El American Colony es un bonito hotel que está en Jerusalén Este, pero muy cerca de la antigua línea divisoria entre las dos mitades de la ciudad. El personal del local es palestino, pero el propietario es una cadena suiza de hoteles.
Supongo que a los iniciados les sorprenderá esa definición de "hoteles judíos". Como se ve, allí no pasa nada con decirlo. En boca de un no judío, sonaría hasta mal.
