Fort Apache en Irak
Corrección:
El mando militar norteamericano en Irak ha difundido un comunicado en el que reduce sustancialmente el número de bajas. No hubo muertos y la mayoría de los heridos fueron leves. La información original --con dos muertos y 17 heridos-- también procedía de un comunicado de los militares y había sido recogida por la mayoría de los medios de comunicación norteamericanos.

La escalada ya se empieza a notar en Irak. Un ataque coordinado sobre un puesto militar en Tarmiyah, al norte de Bagdad, deja tres soldados norteamericanos muertos y 17 heridos. Los detalles varían según la fuente. Coinciden en que la operación comenzó poco antes del amanecer con la explosión de uno o dos coches bomba. Al instante se desató un infierno:
Insurgents then opened fire with rockets mounted on a truck and from a nearby building, Iraqi police officials said. Mortar shells and small-arms fire added to the confusion as U.S. fighter jets, helicopters and ground forces responded in a battle that raged until noon, witnesses said. U.S. helicopters landed at least five times to evacuate casualties, Iraqi police officials and witnesses said.
Según el WP, el ataque duró 20 minutos, lo que no dejaría en buen lugar a los norteamericanos. Una baja por minuto no es una marca de la que enorgullecerse. Según LAT, el enfrentamiento duró varios horas. Eso demostraría la capacidad de los insurgentes para continuar en combate durante bastante tiempo, a pesar de que tenían que suponer que los norteamericanos recibirían refuerzos de Bagdad.

Aparentemente todo era una exageración, el último reporte dice que hay sólo 5 soldados heridos de gravedad y los demás están de vuelta en el trabajo.

Update on Tarmiyah attack
MND-B troops fight off insurgents, detain seven in wake of onslaught
Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAo 1st Cav. Div. Public Affairs
BAGHDAD – Twenty-nine Multi-National Division Soldiers were injured when
insurgents attacked a combat outpost in Tarmiyah Feb. 19. An initial release on Feb.
19 announced that 17 troops had been wounded and two killed in the attack.
The U.S. Soldiers defending the outpost were able to maintain security of the
compound, evacuate the wounded and elements of the unit successfully detained seven
suspected insurgents in the wake of the attack.
Of the 29 Soldiers wounded in action, 24 suffered minor injuries and have
returned to duty. Five others suffered more serious injuries and are receiving medical
treatment for their wounds.
The initial release characterized the attack on the outpost, north of Baghdad, as
a coordinated attack, due to the deliberate nature of the operation by insurgents and
their use of several weapons systems against the outpost. During the attack, insurgents
targeted U.S. troops with small arms fire, rocket-propelled grenades and a single
vehicle-borne explosive device.
The Tarmiyah combat outpost was defended solely by American troops. Iraqi
police left the site in December, relocating the district police headquarters to nearby
Mushada.

De algo sí podemos estar seguros, el ataque fue suficientemente violento como para crear la confusión que se requiere para que el mando estadounidense haga un comunicado inicial tan trágico.
